The Fellow of Chartered Professional Accountants (FCPA) designation is granted to members who have rendered exceptional service to the profession, or whose achievements in their careers, the community or in the profession have earned them distinction and brought honour to the profession.
The Chartered Professional Accountants of Prince Edward Island is pleased to recognize the contributions to the profession and community by Blair Corkum, FCPA, CA, R.F.P., CFP®, CFDS, CLU, CHS.
Blair graduated first in his class with a Bachelor of Commerce from Dalhousie University in 1976 and obtained his Chartered Accountant designation in 1978, the first of many designations he would achieve during his career.
Blair, originally from Middle LaHave, NS, began his career working in public practice in the areas of accounting, tax and business consulting. Although self-employed for most of his career, he worked initially with Coopers & Lybrand in both provinces, having moved to PEI in 1990. Instilled by his clients to be able to answer more of their questions, he obtained additional credentials starting in the 1980’s. In addition to being a CPA, CA, he holds Registered Financial Planner (R.F.P.), Chartered Financial Divorce Specialist (CFDS), and several other related designations (CFP®, CLU, CHS). After selling his public accounting business, instead of retiring on January 1, 2014, as planned, he started his new business, Blair Corkum Financial Planning Inc. He has a niche as the Island’s only hourly based fee-only Registered Financial Planner and Chartered Financial Divorce Specialist (and is still trying to retire).
In addition to his own professional accomplishments, Blair has worked tirelessly for the community, generously giving of his time and talents serving on dozens of boards and committees, with encouragement and support for over fifty years from his wife, Sharlene. Blair made it a particular priority to give back to organizations that support education. In particular, in 1991, he volunteered with the national non-profit Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation, the founder of children’s education savings plans in Canada, moving from being a member of the Advisory Council to being Chair of the Audit and Risk Management Committee until 2012. Locally, he has been involved for about 18 years on committees and/or the Board with both the Community Legal Information Association (CLI) and the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce (GCACC).
On an individual basis, he has promoted financial literacy and sound policy by writing financial columns, guest speaking, advising non-profit organizations, volunteering for federal and province government committees, being a presenter for CPA Canada Financial Literacy and doing local presentations for seniors and community organizations.
In 2016, he was presented with the Rotary Club of Charlottetown Community Engagement award as a member of the community who regularly and without fanfare contributed to the wellbeing of the community. In 2018, Blair received both the Volunteer Excellence Award from the GCACC and an award from the PEI Volunteer Resource Council for his service with CLI.
Please join us in congratulating Blair on being the 2025 Fellow Recipient.
Blair will be formally presented with his Award at the 2025 Convocation and Awards Ceremony on Friday, June 13, 2025, at the Florence Simmons Performance Hall. Event tickets will be available on our website in late April.
