This initiative was sent to us by Stephen Murphy. It is open to everyone and is an excellent opportunity for any small business that may need assistance at this time. This is not meant to replace the advice of your regular advisor but with so many organizations requiring assistance right now, it is meant to fill the gap.  Please consider taking them up on their offer. Last night, CRA announced additional extensions to many filing tax deadlines. CPA Canada’s discussions with senior CRA officials and ministerial staff have had a positive influence on the measures that CRA announced.

Federal government announces broad tax deadline extensions

The federal government announced additional extensions to many for tax-related deadlines. Most federal tax filing deadlines have been extended to June 1, 2020, including the March 31 deadline for T1134 forms and T2s. The filing deadline for the T5013 partnership return and other information that individuals will need to complete their T1 returns has been extended to May 1, 2020.

Note that some returns and payments will still be due at the usual time.

Find more information on the announcement.

A lot has changed since our last COVID-19 update on March 20th. A few key changes with respect to our operation and processes are listed here:

Visitors to CPA Prince Edward Island Office

The office has transitioned to a remote work environment. Our office is closed to visitors and we have enabled employees to work from home until further notice. Our staff remain fully available via email and phone in the same manner as normal. To reach the staff by phone, please call our office line at 902-894-4290 and leave a message.

Membership Renewal

Membership renewal is payable by May 31, 2020, in accordance with our bylaws. We encourage those in a position to do so to please proceed to meet the deadline. However, due to the circumstances of COVID-19, we understand that timely renewals may be challenging for some members and employers. With this in mind, we will be considering existing requirements.

For any questions regarding membership renewal, contact tobrien@cpapei.ca.

Member Certificates and Public Accounting Licenses

While we will continue to process Membership changes and Public Accounting Licences, we have suspended the mailing or pick up of these items. As always, a listing of Members is available on our website and you can verify a Member is in good standing by contacting info@cpapei.ca.

Professional Development

In the event you are looking to complete some professional development while working remotely, our on-demand courses remain available; you can find a selection of courses on our website. We are working with our provincial partners and suppliers to add to the selection of online courses.

CPA Canada recognizes that this is a challenging time for all. To help you navigate through this difficult period, they have compiled an inventory of external resources to help you better understand and assess the potential reporting and audit implications of COVID-19. Resources may be accessed here.

March 20, 2020

Given the current challenges we are all facing with the rapid developments around the COVID-19 pandemic, I know you are all concerned for your businesses, clients and your own well-being. These events are unprecedented in modern times.

We would like to point you in the direction of some of the information the Province of PEI has already made available:

They have a "For Business" web page on the Government’s website and they will continue to build this web page as they have more information and supports to help those impacted by COVID-19. This includes information about what programs they have introduced (Emergency Income Relief for the Self-Employed and Emergency Working Capital Financing).

Where businesses have unanswered questions or want to share concerns, they have set up a toll-free number – 1-866-222-1751 – open between 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday – for Island employers as well as an associated email address PEIbusinesshelpline@gov.pe.ca . They ask Islanders for their patience, as they continue to receive a high volume of calls.

In addition, yesterday the Federal Government announced economic supports to help Canadians impacted by COVID-19. More information can be found here.

March 18, 2020

In its response to the COVID-19 crisis, the federal government has released information on tax extensions and other changes. CPA Canada continues to work with the government to clarify all tax deadlines. Access the government announcement here.

March 17, 2020

We are carefully monitoring the Coronavirus (COVID-19) public health risk, and are committed to ensuring we keep you updated on how this will impact upcoming activities and operations:

The CPA Prince Edward Island office is currently open but we are monitoring the situation closely and will implement a work from home arrangement when necessary. You may still communicate with us via email as usual. If you call a staff member, please leave a message on their voicemail, and they will get back to you.

Members may continue to register for on-line courses by sending registration forms to info@cpapei.ca.

Please note that our in person New Member Information Session will be postponed.

Our Member portal on www.cpapei.ca is fully functional, and we hope to have member dues invoices available shortly. You may record and declare your CPD as usual. If you need to make a payment to us by cheque and are prevented from doing so by COVID-19 (for instance, if your organization is shut down), please contact us at info@cpapei.ca.

All CPA Prince Edward Island committees and the Board of Directors will move their meetings to call-in rather than in-person.

In the midst of this ever-evolving situation, we have not yet made a decision about the Convocation taking place on June 5, 2020. We will be assessing the options over the coming weeks and will provide an update as soon as possible.

We encourage you to follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, where we will share news as it emerges. For instance, CPA Canada is working with the CRA and federal government on matters like tax deadlines and we’ll get any new information on those issues out through social media as we receive them.

We hope you and your families are all safe and healthy, and we are here to assist in any way we can in these unprecedented times.

Best regards,

Tanya O'Brien, CPA, CA
